Tips & Tricks
Pickup sports
For a game with 10 people, choose 2 teams for 5-a-side. With an odd number, one team simply has an extra player; you can rotate that player between games.
Keep friends or partners together
Select the players who must be on the same team and click Keep Together before you generate. Useful for pairs in doubles games or people carpooling together.
Split known strong players
If a few players are clearly stronger, select them and click Keep Apart so they land on different teams. You need at least as many teams as players in that rule; the tool warns you if not.
Trivia nights and game nights
Use team names mode with names that fit the theme. Regenerate between rounds so people mix with different teammates.
Workshops and hackathons
Paste the attendee list, pick the team size you want (usually 3-5), and generate. Download the CSV so you can share the teams in a spreadsheet.
Draw fairly in front of a group
Share your screen and click generate once. Because the result is random and can be regenerated openly, nobody can accuse you of picking favourites.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the random team generator work?
You enter a list of names, choose how many teams you want (or how many players per team), and click generate. The list is shuffled with an unbiased shuffle driven by your browser's cryptographic random number generator, then dealt out to the teams one player at a time.
What happens if the players don't divide evenly?
Players are dealt out one at a time, so team sizes differ by at most one. For example, 11 players into 2 teams gives one team of 6 and one team of 5. If you have used Keep Together on some players, they are dealt out as a unit, so sizes can differ by a little more.
Does it balance teams by skill?
No. The teams are random, so it cannot know who is stronger. If you know your strongest players, select them and click Keep Apart. They are then guaranteed to be on different teams, as long as you have at least as many teams as players in the rule. Otherwise the tool tells you it cannot do it.
Can I give my teams names instead of numbers?
Yes. Switch the grouping method to team names, add names such as Red, Blue and Green, and the results use those names in the order you entered them.
Can I keep certain people on the same team?
Yes. Select two or more players and click Keep Together. Those players are always placed on the same team.
Can I save or share the teams?
Use Copy to copy the teams as text for a chat or email, or download a CSV file (Team, Name) that opens in Excel or Google Sheets. Teams are not stored on our servers and disappear when you leave the page.
Is my list of names sent anywhere?
No. The teams are created in your browser and the names you type are not uploaded by the tool.
What is the difference between this and the random group generator?
They use the same engine. This page is set up for teams (results are labelled Team 1, Team 2 and so on, starting with a set number of teams), while the random group generator is the general version for any kind of grouping.
