Tips & Tricks
Partner work in class
Re-roll at the start of each activity so students work with different classmates. For a large class you can also use the classroom group generator.
Avoid repeat partners
If two people were partners last time, select them and click Keep Apart. The tool doesn't remember previous rounds, so add the rule for anyone you want to keep separate.
Odd numbers
With an odd number of people, one group of three is made. Pairs are still the rule for everyone else.
Pair programming and study buddies
Paste the team or class list, generate, and share the copied pairs in your chat or planning document.
Doubles and mixed events
For tennis, badminton or table-tennis doubles, generate the pairs and then use the random team generator if you also need to split pairs into teams.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the random pair generator work?
Paste your list of names, one per line, and click generate. The list is shuffled with an unbiased shuffle driven by your browser's cryptographic random number generator, then split into groups of two.
What happens if there is an odd number of people?
One group has three people, so nobody is left without a partner. For example, 11 names give four pairs and one trio, and 27 names give twelve pairs and one trio. The extra person is added to a random pair.
Can I stop two specific people from being paired together?
Yes. Select the two people and click Keep Apart. They are guaranteed never to be in the same pair. If the rule can't be met with your settings, the tool tells you instead of ignoring it.
Can I keep two people as a fixed pair?
Yes. Select them and click Keep Together. They will always be placed in the same pair, and everyone else is paired randomly around them.
Does it avoid pairing people who were partners last time?
Not automatically. The tool does not remember earlier results. To avoid a repeat, select the two people who partnered last time and click Keep Apart before you generate. Your last few results also stay visible on the page during the session.
Can I use it for something other than pairs?
Yes. Change the group size to 3 or 4 for small groups, or use the random group generator or random team generator for other splits.
Is it fair?
Yes. Every possible pairing is equally likely, apart from the rules you add yourself. Nothing is weighted by the order of the names.
Are the names I type stored or sent anywhere?
No. Pairs are created in your browser and the names are not uploaded by the tool. They disappear when you close or refresh the page.
