Paste your class list
Copy the names from your roster or spreadsheet and paste them in, one per line. First names or initials work well.Set the group size
Groups of 2 give you partners, groups of 3-4 suit most projects. If you prefer to fix the number of groups instead, switch to 'By Number of Groups'.Adjust for your class
Use Keep Together for students who should stay in the same group, or Keep Apart to make sure certain students are in different groups. You can also name groups instead of numbering them.Generate and share

Tips & Tricks
Pairs for think-pair-share
Set the group size to 2 for quick partner work, or use the random pair generator, which starts with pairs. Regenerate at the start of each activity so students talk to different classmates.
Groups of 3-4 for projects
Small groups keep everyone involved. With 4 or more, it becomes easier for one student to sit back, so keep group work tasks structured with clear roles.
Support students who need a buddy
Select a student and a classmate who works well with them and click Keep Together so they are always placed together, then let everyone else be random.
Separate students who distract each other
Select them and click Keep Apart. They will never be placed in the same group, and if that is impossible with your settings the tool tells you rather than ignoring the rule.
Make it transparent
Project the screen and click generate in front of the class. Random, visible grouping avoids the feeling that you picked favourites.
Name groups for stations and rotations
Use group names such as Station A, B and C so students know where to go. Add the names in the order you want them displayed.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I divide my class into groups?
Paste your class list with one name per line, choose 'By Group Size' and enter how many students you want in each group (for example 4), then click generate. Choose 'By Number of Groups' instead if you know how many groups you need.
How do I make random partners or pairs?
Set the group size to 2. If your class has an odd number of students, one group will have three students, so nobody is left without a partner.
What if the class doesn't divide evenly?
Students are dealt out one at a time, so group sizes differ by at most one. With 27 students in groups of about 4, you get a mix of groups of 4 and 3 rather than one very small group.
Can I keep certain students together or apart?
Yes. Select students and click Keep Together to keep them in the same group, for example a student who needs a buddy. Select students and click Keep Apart to make sure no two of them are ever in the same group. Both rules are guaranteed. If they cannot all be met (for example, four students kept apart but only three groups), the tool says so and asks you to add groups or change the rule.
Are student names stored or sent anywhere?
The tool works in your browser and does not upload the names you type. Nothing is saved on our servers, so the list is gone when you close or refresh the page. As a good habit, you can use first names or initials only.
Can I give groups names, like animals or colours?
Yes. Choose the option that uses group names, add your labels (such as Lions, Tigers, Bears), and the groups are labelled in that order.
Can I save the groups for later?
Download the groups as a CSV file (Group, Name) that opens in Excel or Google Sheets, or copy them as text to paste into a document or your learning platform.
How often should I change groups?
Many teachers reshuffle for each new project or unit so students work with different classmates over the year. Regenerating takes a few seconds, so you can also do it for a single lesson.
